Installing Processor Preference Pane for Snow Leopard
I had some trouble running my processor preferences pane after upgrading my Leopard to a Snow Leopard install, so I'm putting up this quick tutorial on getting it to run. The preference pane runs in 32-bit mode (forcing the system preferences to restart) and doesn't show in the menu bar for me, but it works!
1. Install the latest developer tools
If you've got your snow leopard install disc handy, just install "Xcode.mpkg" off the disc from the folder "Optional Installs". Otherwise, you can download it from Apple's Developer Center (http://developer.apple.com/TOOLS/Xcode/). You'll need to sign-up for the download probably, but it's free.
2. Install the processor preference pane
Once you've got the latest version of the developer tools, find Macintosh HD/Developer/Extras/PreferencePanes. In there you should have Processor.prefPane. Double-click to open that guy and it should open Systems Prefences window and prompt you to install. Go ahead and install it.
3. That's it
You should have the Processor preference pane under the Hardware section. When you open it, you will most likely have to okay a relaunch of System Preferences in 32-bit mode. In the Processor pane, you have the ability to turn off processor cores. This is good for testing and optimizing software but is also useful if you're trying to conserve your battery or use less energy.
Hope you enjoyed it!
